How to Add a Featured Image to a WordPress Blog Post

Set the featured image in post settings and understand how it differs from images inside the article.

Quick answer

Set the featured image in post settings and understand how it differs from images inside the article.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Step 01

Go to Posts → All Posts, choose the article and open the editor.

  2. Step 02

Open the Post settings sidebar, not the selected paragraph's Block settings.

  3. Step 03

Find Featured Image, choose Set featured image and upload or select a suitable image.

  4. Step 04

Add alt text that describes the image when it conveys useful information; avoid stuffing keywords into alt text.

  5. Step 05

Use a consistent landscape shape for article cards, such as about 1200 × 630 pixels if your theme suits it.

  6. Step 06

Save/Update the post, then check its card in the Latest Articles Query Loop.

  7. Step 07

If the image appears twice on the single post, check whether your theme already displays featured images before adding an Image block into the body.

Before you finish: important checks

  • Featured Image is not automatically the same as an inline Image block.

Common problems and fixes

  • Image not visible on Home? Check that Query Loop includes a Post Featured Image block.
  • Image cropped oddly? Adjust the theme/block image aspect ratio or upload a suitable composition.
